Veterans threaten relay hunger strike over OROP

New Delhi : Jun 15 2015 : The Times of India (Hyderabad)

Hundreds of retired military personnel on Sunday staged demonstrations at 55 locations around India, including Delhi, demanding immediate implementation of one rank, one pension (OROP).

The United Ex-Servicemen of India, an umbrella group formed by the veterans, said protesters will on Monday launch a relay hunger strike to push for OROP . The veterans will also submit a petition regarding their demand to President Pranab Mukherjee.

Their demonstration in Delhi on Sunday also saw participation by some farmer groups, with the groups finding common ground in the slogan `Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan'. A few students of Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University joined in as well.

The demand for OROP is expected to benefit 25 lakh ex-servicemen and their widows.Under OROP , all retired personnel of a given rank with equal experience will draw the same pension, irrespective of the year of retirement. Defence minister Manohar Parrikar, in Jaipur on Sunday , sought to assuage their concerns by urging patience, saying the government will keep its promise. “I assure you whatever we have promised, all that will be done... “ he said.

But Major General Satbir Singh (Retired), vice-chairman of Indian Ex-Servicemen Movement, said the protests will continue till OROP is implemented. In a letter to the PM, Singh added, “Your voice is still echoing in our mind when you roared in ex-servicemen rally in Rewari... and declared that had there been BJP government in 2004, OROP would have been reality by now.“

Singh said retired military personnel “all over India... voted for Mr Modi. Consequently BJP received an unprecedented mandate“.

  1. Hats off to all the veterans who participated in the rally and those who are doing relay hunger strike, but there is no reaction from the govt, they are interested only in safeguarding sushma swaraj, hoots they care for us, there is a saying if ant sits on elephant, kya patha chalega moti chamidi wali haathi ko, D M gave some statement patience is required, tell him to see that warrant officer who is 92 years old and ask him to have patience, height of things don't the govt heart melt by seeing the widows, how tragic and inhuman it is

  2. Dear sir,
Mr arun jaitley whose presence in the government as finance minister vis-a-vis under power intoxication in the BJP, the scene of uncertain and havoc in the mind of ex army personnel are haunting, when they are not able to manage the situation, mr modi and his kitchen government can enmasse resign and fresh election be held, let the new government manage the financial crisis, what are the negative hall marks of arun jaitely firstly he is lawyer and has been in the lok sabha for more the two decades, as if he is emperor of country he behaves and tortures the people of india. he should be odded out otherwise the country will land in trouble, it is being watched by all neighbouring countries that may pose external threat because the present scenerio created by him

The NDA still sleeping.Mr Modi has closed his eyes.Probably he is waiting to see the next step going to be taken by veterans.AJ is instigating the PM .Unfortunately the entire economy of this country is shattering under the leadership of present FM. The govt is digging its own graveyard for the next election.By that time the masses would come to know the actual theme of Achhe Din.Its high time for Modi govt to understand the feelings of veteran brothers.

  4. It seems as seen and heard on tv they are going to announce before bihar elections, its nothing but a trap, this people can do any thing they are capable, they want to put a stop to our agitation, when elections are over it will be back to square one, if they want real implementation, the arrears and orop should be before elections, nothing less than that, till that time our struggle should continue
