SOME RESPITE ON OROP - After Manohar Parrikar's assurance, veterans to give more time to government before escalation

New Delhi: Disappointed with the Independence Day speech by Prime Minister Narendra Modi where he did not make a firm commitment on the 'One Rank One Pension' issue, veterans had been planning an intensification of protests throughout the nation, but a massive reach out by the government has slowed things down for the moment.

While several veterans at Jantar Mantar announced fast unto death and rallies were being planned across cities, many top government functionaries reached out to the united ex-servicemen front, re- questing them not to escalate matters for a few days as final efforts were on to resolve the issue

On Saturday, hours after PM Modi’s speech, defence minister Manohar Parrikar reached out to the veteran’s organisation, requesting them for ‘4-5 days’ for a final resolution. This reach-out was followed by a similar meeting and request by minister of state for foreign affairs Gen VK Singh (retd), who also requested that the matter should not be escalated as the issue was being resolved.

On Sunday, Army Chief Gen Dalbir Singh also spoke to the veterans, requesting them to call off the protest. Sources said that while veterans have promised not to escalate matters for the next week due to multiple government assurances, they are in no mood to back off. The relay hunger strike in the Capital is continuing and a presence will be maintained at Jantar Mantar, sources said.

  1. dear sir,

The only stumbling block and sabotage activity is unleashed by arun jaitley because he was rejected by the people in the lok sabha election, in retaliation he is doing all these hurdles to scuttle the efforts of government, even he is daringly ill advise other department to ask for similar demand so that matter may become more complex and intangible

    1. It is very correct. He became minister through back door. He was rejected by the people of India.

  2. Mr. Karunakaran you are 110 % correct and I am 100% agree with you. My readings and calculations are always coinside & inline with your feelings. The main culprit for every worst things is Jaitley.

  3. I personally feel that the attitude of the govt towards the ongoing agitation for grant of OROP is not going to change unless we escalate matters to a point wherein they will be forced to accept our demands. Just do not believe or trust them, they are just buying time. Col Vijay Kumar

  7. According to karan thapars program to the point, what one could understand is, the government is bentupon for a diluted OROP, first is They want the base year as 2011, not 2015, here there lot of difference in basic pay of 2011 retirees and 2014 retirees, they want to encash that and fill there coffers. Secondly they want to implementation date as Jan 2015 not April 2014, this way they will be able to save from our arrears of 8 months pension, Hats off to there wisdom, by doing so 8 months of the arrears is encashed and put into there coffers, so silly of them and there ideas. Thirdly automatic increase in pay anomoly every year to be passed on to veterans also that also they want to dilute by giving some percentage and put into there coffers, so totally and roughly about 3 to 4 thousand crores of rupees is the diluted money and put into there coffers, by doing so the whole meaning of orop is lost and we are back to square one, and they pay us peanuts

  9. Dear Sir
I fully agree with Sri Karunakaran. When Mr. Arun Jaitely was DM for a short period, he asked ESM to lower down their expectations. Now he is FM, so how can you expect that he will allow 8300 crore so easily? Only ESM unity will force him . So all ESM be United.

  10. A small suggestion.
It is understood that PMO has started interacting with the Veterans on OROP. In case the out come on OROP is to the satisfaction of the Veterans,it is suggested that Officers including Veteran officers should fore-go their LPG subsidy, as a goodwill gesture for the Country and the government particularly the PM, TO HELP THE NEEDY.
